Washing Your Hair Everyday Is NOT Good

As the title suggests, we should NOT be washing our hair daily. This is evident because we all know, shampoos and conditioners contain chemicals that damage hair roots and can have adverse effects on the health of our scalp.

This leaves us with one obvious question which is, how often should we wash our hair during the week. This answer truly depends on your particular hair and scalp.

Determine how long it takes for your hair to feel oily

If it takes just 1 day to begin feeling your hair becoming oily, then you should be washing you hair every second day. However, if it takes 2 or 3 days for your to begin feeling oily hair, then you should be washing your hair every 3rd day.

Oily hair is Good, but too much is Bad - Find the balance

Our scalp produces an oil called sebum which protects and nurtures the hair. But the accumulation of too much sebum will eventually damage hair follicles and then cause them to shrink and then hair loss could occur.

This is why an important factor to maintaining a healthy scalp is to continually find a balance between no too oily and not too dry.

When shampooing your hair, you can occasionally feel that your scalp is still oily. This is when you will need to shampoo it a second time to ensure that all excess oil is removed from your scalp.

Different bodies have different Rules

Most body parts below your neck can stay clean by washing it once per day. For your face it should be washed both, in the morning and at night.

As for your hair, it’s not the same for all, but you probably only need to wash it 2 or 3 times per week.

While most of us try to keep a good hair cleansing and maintenance routine, we do it without the understanding of how to best achieve it.

Each part of our body has a specified way of cleaning it. How you wash the skin on your face is not the same way you wash the skin on the other areas of your body. Prepare Thoroughly Before Every Wash

1) The first step in preparing your hair is to oil your scalp and entire head with natural hair growth oil.

Let it soak in for a couple of hours before the actual wash. Hair oils soothe the scalp and help restore the natural flow of blood into the hair follicles.

Another reason to oil your hair before washing it is due to the shampooing effect left on hair. Shampoos drain the scalp and hair off its essential natural oil composition. Using natural hair oil as a base before any shampoo comes into contact with the hair and scalp will prevent any harsh chemicals and compounds from corroding its outermost layers.

2) Secondly, you'll need to brush out your hair to remove any tangles and knots.

We do this before the actual wash because hair becomes very sensitive and easily breakable once it gets wet.

Don't start by shampooing immediately rather, rinse your hair with clean water then apply the shampoo on the scalp and hair roots. Massage it in lightly then proceed to the first rinse. Depending on how dirty your head is, you may have to apply the shampoo a second or third time as you rinse it out, do this till the foam and water that comes off is clear of any dirt colorant.

The Right Water Temperature to Wash Hair

The first and most important component in cleansing the hair is water.

Water is a universal solvent that has just the right amount of gases, compounds and nutrients. As a solvent low in viscosity, it easily penetrates some hard to reach areas of the scalp and hair and softens these areas to remove dirt and smudge. For the sake of the blood capillaries, veins, scalp and hair cells the right water temperature should be used while washing the hair. The best water temperate to wash hair should be slightly hot to lukewarm and for conditioner use cold water.

Do not use very hot water while shampooing your hair since its heat will burn the protein layer on the hair. Very hot water also interferes with the natural way of warming the body which is often gradual as you adjust the temperatures. Instant warmth applied on the body is not right and may result in a sudden heat wave on its cells thus causing frizz and strain.

Conditioners are often milder than shampoos and they contain compounds that are relevant for restoring and strengthening hair cuticles.

For them to work effectively we advise that they are used right after shampooing the hair. Apply the conditioner along its entire length and massage it into the scalp using your fingers. Leave the conditioner on the hair for a few minutes then rinse it out with cold water. This water shouldn’t be very cold but have cool temperatures agreeable to the body.

Hair conditioners are best for closing the scalp pores and cuticles. Open pores and cuticles should be avoided at every cost, if left open harmful bacterial and microbial agents may penetrate through. These agents may be useful on the outside of the pores and cuticles but once inside them they may cause serious hair and scalp conditions.

Use a good conditioner that has smoothing and hydrating properties.

On the use of conditioners, we strongly advise that you don't stick to one manufacturer, change them as oft as possible.

Other than the common rinse out conditioners we are used to there are other types of conditioners known as leave-in conditioners. These conditioners are best used to restore dry brittle hair.

4) Don't take too long: Your hair is at it's most fragile state when it is wet. This is why shampooing, conditioning, rinsing and drying should be done within 15 minutes to keep hair damaging at a minimum.

How To Best Dry Your Hair After Washing It

After the washing routine comes the drying routine. Avoid vigorously rubbing your hair or toweling it to dry water.

Press a clean dry towel against the hair, pat all around it and let the water soak into the towel. Do not move the towel in a back and forth manner since this movement will eventually weaken and damage the hair.
